Do Powerboards and Extension Leads Need Test and Tag?

Guides 11 October 2026

Short answer

Yes. Powerboards and extension leads are among the most common electrical items inspected and tested in workplaces because they are regularly handled, moved, overloaded and damaged.

They should be considered as part of how a business manages the risks from plug-in electrical equipment.

What commonly goes wrong?

One of the most common faults we find is exposed wiring where the flexible cord enters the powerboard or extension lead.

We also find loose internal components. Sometimes a board has suffered heat, overload or surge damage and internal parts have deteriorated or melted. When you pick it up, it can rattle loudly — an obvious sign that something is wrong inside.

Piggybacking is another very common workplace risk. This is where one powerboard is plugged into another, or multiple appliances are connected through extension devices that were never intended to carry that combined load continuously.

Overloading is a bigger problem than many people realise

Many office workers do not understand what the wattage rating on a powerboard actually means.

A board rated around 2400 watts can easily be overloaded if high-powered appliances such as a microwave, toaster, kettle or heater are connected at the same time. Once the combined load exceeds what the board is designed to carry, heat builds up and components can fail.

This is why electrical safety is not just about whether an item still switches on. How the equipment is being used matters just as much.

What we see in the field

We regularly find powerboards that are decades old, badly faded and still being used every day. Some older boards are 30 to 40 years old and were never designed for continuous service over that sort of lifespan.

We remove obviously deteriorated equipment from service rather than simply placing another tag on it.

One powerboard we inspected had part of its casing physically missing after internal heat damage. It was still connected to office equipment including the Wi-Fi system and photocopier.

That is exactly why inspection matters: an electrical item can remain in use long after it should have been replaced.
