Why Emergency & Exit Light Testing Matters

Emergency and exit lights are there for one moment: when normal power fails. They illuminate escape paths, exits and stairwells so people can evacuate safely. If they fail during an outage, the risk is immediate—confusion, delayed evacuation and potential injury.

Most failures are not visible during normal operation. Lights can appear functional but fail before their required duration when tested properly. That's why regular testing is not a box to tick—it's a critical part of workplace safety and compliance.

  • Routine inspections (≤ 6-month intervals) to AS/NZS 2293.2:2019
  • Full rated-duration discharge testing (typically 90 minutes)
  • Pass/fail outcomes with defect notes
  • PDF logbook with next-due dates
  • Photo evidence available on request

Testing Requirements for NSW Workplaces

Emergency and exit lighting systems in Australian workplaces must be inspected and tested regularly to ensure they operate during an emergency. In practice, this involves:

Inspection & Function Tests – Every 6 Months

Visual inspection and functional testing to confirm each emergency light and exit sign operates when mains power is interrupted.

Discharge (Duration) Test – Every 12 Months

A full battery discharge test confirming emergency lights operate for at least 90 minutes in accordance with AS/NZS 2293.2.

Repairs or Replacement – As Required

Any failed fittings must be repaired or replaced and re-tested to maintain a compliant system.

Emergency lighting must be tested at least every 6 months, with full discharge testing performed annually.

Common Emergency Lighting Failures We Find

Button-Test Passes But 90-Minute Discharge Fails

Light activates but fails before the rated duration (typically 90 minutes)

Missing or Outdated Logbooks

Non-compliance during WHS audits or building inspections

Degraded Batteries

Old batteries that no longer hold charge or provide adequate runtime

Exit Signs With Visibility or Illumination Performance Issues

Signs that are too dim or not visible from required distances

Quick Checks Instead of Full Discharge Tests

Visual-only inspections miss critical battery failures

These issues are rarely identified through quick checks alone. Full discharge testing is required to confirm performance. Liberty Test & Tag conducts rated-duration discharge testing to identify issues before they become hazards.

SafeWork NSW identifies lighting as a key safety factor in workplaces and requires that lighting systems—including emergency lighting—are maintained, functional and capable of supporting safe evacuation. Regular inspection, testing and maintenance are essential to ensure these systems operate correctly when needed.
